How many more?

How many more?

It’s another World Suicide Prevention Awareness Day. What has changed?

Yet another person I love has been lost to this epidemic.

I am so tired. Or numb, I’m not sure.

And I cannot understand the persistent fear around talking about suicide. Not talking about it isn’t changing anything. People – mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, friends are still dying.

We know very well that talking about it doesn’t increase the likelihood of suicide happening, but it can provide an intervention and serve as a gateway for someone getting the vital support that they need.

I am speaking as someone who has both survived suicide and lost loved ones to it. We can no longer afford to stay mum on the matter.

Silence isn’t saving anyone. And all of us have the power to make a difference, potentially saving lives by simply being open to talking about it.

Whether it is a friend or a complete stranger, there are ways to go about it, and anyone can do it.

If you’re worried or would like to feel more prepared do the free online training from Zero Suicide Alliance. I take it every year, it’s free and only takes 30 minutes.

Please, please, please, do the training. Something has to change.

Gentle hugs x
